4 RED FLAGS TO LOOK OUT FOR WHEN HIRING A PERSONAL BRAND PHOTOGRAPHER

There are loads of great personal branding photographers out there, but (unfortunately) there are also a few you simply shouldn’t hire.

If you look out for the following red flags, you will ensure you don’t waste your hard-earned money and end up feeling disappointed with your experience and photos.

Red Flag #1: No Pre-Shoot Call

A professional photographer will always want to have a preparation call or planning meeting before your shoot. Not only do they want to get to know you, but they will want to explain what you can expect on the day and what they will need from you before and during the shoot.

Red Flag #2: No Pre-Shoot Questionnaire

Every personal branding shoot is different because every person is unique. The right photographer will have a few questions for you prior to your shoot. This could comprise filling in a questionnaire or workbook, or answering their questions over the phone. A true professional needs as much information as possible to plan your shots, ensuring you achieve your goals for the shoot.

Red Flag #3: Photo Quality Is Questionable

A photographer without a portfolio is a big no-no. However, a portfolio that shows bland, badly lit or poorly composed photographs is another red flag. A professional personal branding photographer knows how to portray your story in images, but should also have the technical skills to produce quality images. So if the shots look no better than something you could easily snap on your phone, it’s best to continue your search.

Red Flag #4: They’re Dismissive and Rushed

Yes, photographers are busy and they won’t always be able to answer every message and call right away, but you want to schedule a shoot with someone you feel comfortable with. If a photographer is dismissive of your questions, dodges your phone calls all the time, and simply won’t take the time to give you the information you need, they’re not a good fit.

When it comes to something as important as your personal branding session, you want to choose the right photographer the first time around. If you notice any of these red flags – or all of them (!) – move on to your next choice.
